It is with sadness we report our longstanding member, Joan Dow, has passed away on Tuesday morning. The club mourns with her husband Dick and her children, Chrissy and Chris Kubicek.

What a diminutive powerhouse we have lost! Joan held the position of Sidestays president and tennis chair. In terms of her love, tennis was foremost in her mind. But “love” in tennis was not her desired score; she fought to win. Her attire won the court always. Joan owned a tennis shop and the women of Beulah were most stylish during her day, donning her shop’s choices. Her skill and drive often led her to a winning position in the hearts of all the tennis players. She was a tough competitor with the manners and devotion of a true tennis champion.

Joan served many years on the LBYC signal boat. Her small stature could be seen barely over the siderails of the pontoon with a mighty set of hands hoisting the flags. Her daughter Chrissy was usually at her side in the front of the boat. What a picture they made leading the sailors to a good start.

Her presence on the social or Sidestays scene was one of a commander. Mighty in spirit, she led us all to great events but it was her energy, her love among friends working together that we will remember. That sparkle and light in her eyes always demonstrated her love for any task she undertook. She made us all smile as we worked alongside her. But with class! That tiny, speedy leader always looked impeccable in any position, on any day but always. What a grand lady in our club.

The real memory for many of us was her decline in the past five years. Yet, she was there at that club she loved. When her sparkling eyes dimmed, Dick and Chrissy became her guide. She maintained a position on the signal boat with the help of her boatmates. She arrived in style on Dick’s capable arm at every social event. She sat with all her dear friends. We were fortunate to still have her charm fill the room. Dick and Joan set an example of long-lasting love for us all to see.

The club mourns her passing noting the steady, capable serving of one of Beulah’s most hardworking, lovely ladies. Our hearts are extended to her family (Dick, Chrissy and Chris and their children) as they miss their wife, mother and grandmother. The club will miss a true Energizer Bunny with such spirit, such stamina but always with class and impeccable presence. She was a Beulah lady in every sense of who Beulah is – serving individuals who love the Beulah life and family.
